TV viewers will tonight be able to see how a Norwich-born multi-millionaire has helped transform the home of a little girl who lost her legs to meningitis.

Six-year-old Grace Matthews’ family are delighted she now has more independence in their Mile Cross home thanks to property developer Matthew Newbury, who offered to help after being put in touch with Grace’s family by the Evening News.

The refurbishment, including extending Grace’s bedroom and fitting specially adapted bathrooms, has made the Bacton Road house more accessible for the youngster who, as well as losing both her legs below the knee, also lost all her fingers, half the thumb on her left hand and half the palm of her right hand.

Tonight, the refurbishment project is on BBC’s Inside Out. Grace, her parents Vicky and Brian, and seven-year-old brother Thomas are especially pleased to be able to watch the show in their new-look home having moved back at the weekend.

The final part of the refurbishment, a new lift, will be completed in a few weeks.

Mrs Matthews said: “It is perfect.

“Everything is wheelchair-friendly and Grace has a beautiful bedroom with lots of space to play – it is very pink and Grace loves it.

“Everything is more accessible. It is going to help Grace lead a much more independent life.”

She said the family wanted to thank Norwich City Council for a £30,000 disability grant, and Mr Newbury, who recently appeared on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire, for donating the services of his construction company, Newbury Developments.

Mr Newbury, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident and became the first UK patient to receive a bionic prosthetic system, said: “I hope it will make a big difference to Grace’s life.”

BBC1’s Inside Out East programme is tonight at 7.30pm.
