The colourful designer was at the pier’s Seaweed and Salt boutique to promote her Zandra on the Pier collection, which includes seashell-themed handbags, make-up bags, iPhone covers and limited edition jewellery and can be purchased from the shop.

Zandra, who has been nicknamed the princess of punk and designed for Princess Diana, also met her fans and signed copies of her books at the launch, which was the first time she has made a public appearance on a pier.

It was also the second time in 45 years that Zandra has visited Southwold.

She said: “It is nice to come somewhere like this and do things like this.

“I think it is nice to be here today. It is lovely from the point of view that people want me.

Describing the enduring success of her design carer, she said: “I am lucky I am a workaholic.

“I like to think that I listen to my friends and people, because today people come up to me and say “I would have worn this but the colours are too exotic, why don’t you try grey”, and I think I will do grey, do but something different with it.”

  • Why not Yarmouth's Britannia pier? Just joking. Mind you, her hair would fit right in.
