Kindhearted readers have driven the EDP Norfolk and Lowestoft Flood Appeal past the £300,000 mark, helping more than 200 families and businesses.
This year’s Local Newspaper Week, which starts on Monday, May 12, is on the theme of Making A Difference and aims to highlight the good work that local papers do for their communities.
As part of the week, members of the public will be invited to vote for the campaign that has made the biggest difference.
The winner will be announced as part of the Regional Press awards ceremony at London’s Lancaster Hotel on May 16.
The Newspaper Society has selected a shortlist of 30 campaigns, and the flood appeal is among them.
An online public vote for the best Making A Difference campaign will open on May 12 at www.localnewspaperweek.co.uk/making-difference
The campaign was launched after the tidal surge hit our coastal communities on December 5, and it became quickly apparent that the cost to families and businesses would be high.
So far more than £330,000 has been donated, and more than £230,000 has been used to help people in need.
And now thoughts are turning to flood defence schemes, using the remaining £100,000 to help limit any future damage.
Norfolk Community Foundation is administering the funds, and bosses have worked closely with local councils to identify people in real need of swift financial help.
Graham Tuttle, chief executive of the foundation, said requests for help were now tailing off.
“The local authorities have done a good job on the ground looking at people who needed help,” he said
While most people were quick to contact the foundation and most need has been addressed, Mr Tuttle said there were a “few stragglers” remaining.
“We had a meeting this week with the local authorities talking about how we could help and how we would manage the residual money,” he added. “The local authorities have gone back to do work on the ground about the types of things that would help if it happened again.”
