It’s often the first place to find up-to-the-minute breaking news where you live - and now the EDP24 twitter account is celebrating the milestone of reaching 20,000 followers.
History of twitter
Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams on the 21st March 2006 where it was continuously improved until the full version was available to the public a couple of months later in July.
The origins of Twitter lay in a daylong brainstorming session with programmers who worked with the podcasting company Odeo. Dorsey soon introduced an idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group.
Twitter then spun off into its own company in 2007 with the tipping point of Twitters popularity following a couple of months after during the south by southwest festivals occurred. During the events twitters usage increased from 20,000 tweets per day to 60,000.
The social networking name was inspired by Flickr a photo sharing service, the dictionary definition of twitter is ‘a short burst of inconsequential information’. Jack Dorsey has always believed that ‘this is a perfect name because that’s exactly what it was’.
In September, Twitter announced plans to join the stock market, quietly filing for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission, before announcing the move - of course - on Twitter. Though this comes as a shock to most when the social networking site Facebook went public in 2012 but hasn’t taken Wall Street by storm.
And to celebrate the landmark we have teamed up with electrical trader BB Adams to give away an iPad mini to one lucky reader.
All you need to do is follow @EDP24 & tweet using the hashtag #EDP20k anytime within the next seven days for your chance to win.
Katie Spooner, social media manager at the EDP, said “We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone on Twitter. Social media represents a real opportunity for the EDP. It is a fantastic way of reaching and engaging with local communities.
“This is especially true in a culture where news is consumed 24/7 and in multiple locations. By using social media, we are able to make content available to readers as and when they need it. We look forward to the next 20,000 followers.”
The competition closes at 12 noon on November 20 and normal terms an conditions apply, which can be viewed here.
