From an all-American week of workshops to a vintage production of Cinderella - young people can learn new skills and enjoy lots of performance fun in Norwich during the summer holidays.

The Garage’s summer programme kicks off tomorrow and offers arts, media and performance opportunities for people aged eight to 25. Among the activities are summer camp weeks where young people can sign up for the whole week or just come along for the day. Urban Skillz runs from July 24 until 27 and offers workshops in street moves, garage beats, urban grooves and tagz, while All American Extravaganza is from July 31 until August 3 and includes cheerleading, Hollywood special effects, Oscar moments and the chance to take part in a Glee-style mash-up.

Darren Grice, The Garage’s director, said: “Our summer camps are terrific, offering different creative activities every day. It’s all about providing exciting activity during those weeks when young people may have little or nothing to do. We recognise that parents have work commitments, that not everyone gets to go away on holiday. “Everyone who comes along gets the opportunity to work with professional tutors, in a non-school environment that’s packed with fun, new skills and new friends!”

Young people can sign-up for the summer production - a vintage-themed Cinderella set at the end of the second world war - and spend two weeks creating the show which will be performed in August. There is also The Garage’s regular slam night, a media production company teaching broadcast and creative skills and a script-writing course.

Mr Grice said: “I think the success is down to the fact there’s something for everyone. If you just come for a day you can try your hand at stage make-up or street dance. If you fancy something more sustained you can sign up for our summer camp weeks or Cinderella production company. It’s informal, friendly and you don’t need experience.”
