A YOUNG girl has had her long locks lopped off for charity in memory of her grandfather.

Portia Nicholas-Jago, 10, has raised more than five times her original target after having a 20cm plait chopped off.

Her grandfather, policeman Vincent Nicholas-Jago, lived in Martham and worked for both Norfolk and Suffolk police forces before his death of cancer in November 2011, aged 57. Portia aimed to raise £100 for the Palliative Care East department at the James Paget Hospital, who cared for Mr Nicholas-Jago in his final days, but has already raised more than £500 through online donations.

Mr Nichola-Jago’s widow, Georgina, said: “When Portia found out her Grandad was diagnosed with Cancer, she wanted to raise money for charity. She considered all the options available to her that were easy. Sponsoring a netball match, selling food at school or even as a keen swimmer a swimathon. But none of these things seemed quite good enough.

“When her grandad passed away it was a very sad day. Portia grew up not knowing her father as he left the country when she was only 3 years old, her grandad was like a father to her. They enjoyed summers on the Norfolk Broads, Fishing and taking long walks on the beach.

“At the funeral Portia was sitting with Vincent’s ex Metropolitan Police colleagues and announced that she would be growing her hair and donating it to one charity and raising money for another. In that way more than one charity would receive money for her actions and she knew that her grandad would be proud of her.”

For eight months after the funeral, Portia - who has always had very long hair - grew her hair until it was past her waist. She had it cut on June 29, and managed to get enough to donate to the Little Princess Trust - a charity that provides wigs and hair pieces for children who suffer hair loss due to cancer treatment - to make a wig for a girl her age.

Portia, who lives in Hertfordshire, said: “I was really sad when I lost my grandad so cutting my hair for another girl to be able to have a wig is nothing really. I know that I could just grow it back if I wanted to.”

Portia’s amount raised currently stands at £587. To donate visit
