Rebecca Woodrow will travel to Ghana from July 13-27 to help renovate a school and care for children.

The 16-year-old, who lives in Harts Farm, is currently studying A-levels in art, geography, physics, maths and further maths at Norwich High.

“My trip will involve the renovation of the local school I will be helping at, and most importantly aiding and playing with the children of the community.

“In the Akuapem Hills there is an abundance of orphans and my aim is to give them the love and attention they lack in their daily lives while giving them a safer and more homely place to learn,” she said.

She will stay with a host family during the trip.

“I intend to take basic stationery items like pens and pencils along with as many toys and other gifts I can fit into my rucksack to give to the children, so that hopefully I can create a fun environment for them to learn in and make a positive, lasting impression on their lives,” Rebecca said.

To raise the £2,500 needed for the trip, the teenager is organising a series of events. “So far I have raised £400 from my part-time job teaching children to play the piano, and am planning to sell many items hoarded over the years.”

She is also planning to hold a bake sale, take part in sponsored runs and set up an art sale at Wymondham Arts Centre, where she volunteers.

“I am the art scholar at my school and so hope to sell not only my own artwork but also any donations I can receive from my peers and colleagues at work.

“I would also like to organise a singing event in my local city of Norwich as I am an avid singer; ideally I would like to bring this important part of my life to the children of Ghana,” she added.
