Wymondham College has bought three defibrillators which have been implemented across its 85-acre site.

This year, staff are being trained to HSE accredited levels and will then deliver emergency life support skills through the British Heart Foundation HeartStart scheme.

Student lifeguards are also being offered the opportunity to enhance their first aid skills with defibrillator training during half term.

Guy McCurley, safety manager at the college, said: “We have them in the central teaching areas, in the sports hall where there’s a swimming pool and on the playing field.

“It’s a good resource for anyone working, studying or visiting the college.

“It puts us in the best possible situation to save someone’s life and it puts the college in a unique situation in terms of care and safety.”

Principal Melvyn Roffe said the skills which pupils and staff will learn would benefit the community:

“With an increase in public access to defibrillators, staff and students are now in a better position to support other members of the college, as well as members of the public,” he said.

With the help of former Bolton footballer Fabrice Muamba, The British Heart Foundation recently submitted a petition with more than 100,000 signatures to Number 10 Downing Street, calling for life-saving skills to be taught in all schools in England.
