The landlord at a medieval tavern in south Norfolk is putting the final touches to a back-to-school-themed street party to celebrate a prestigious award win.

Justin Harvey, co-landlord of the Green Dragon pub in Wymondham, was given £1,000 to host the event after winning South Norfolk Community Pub of the Year 2013.

The event on Saturday will include face-painting, live music, a hog roast, stalls and even a circus workshop for children in the Wymondham Abbey grounds.

Part of Church Street will be closed to make way for the festivities.

A keen fund-raiser, Mr Harvey has selected five charities to benefit from the proceeds of the day - Wymondham-based cancer charity Star Throwers, the Dogs Trust in Snetterton, the Hamlet Centre in Norwich, Wymondham Abbey and the East of England Air Ambulance.

Mr Harvey, who estimates that more than £11,000 has been raised for charity since he and co-landlord Colin Tickle took over four-and-a-half years ago, said: “Preparations are going really well, we’ve got a lot on. It’s going to be like a mini-carnival - we’re all very excited.

“It is themed - if anyone wants to wear a tie or mortarboard they are welcome to.”

The street party will run from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, August 9, with events planned after in the pub’s newly-refurbished beer garden.
