A semi-retired structural engineer has become the new mayor of Wymondham.

Robert Savage was elected mayor by other councillors at tonight’s (Tuesday, May 2) town council meeting at Central Hall.

Mr Savage - the only councillor put forward for the role - was suggested by outgoing mayor Joe Mooney.

After donning the mayoral chain, Mr Savage said: “I’d like to thank the town council for electing me mayor for the coming year.

“I’d also like to thank councillor Mooney for all the work he has put in as town mayor for the past two years. I consider it a great honour and a privilege to be elected mayor.

“There are a number of ongoing projects such as new council offices, a 3G pitch at Kett’s Park and soon a requirement for a new burial ground. And not least is the need to resolve the play equipment issue on King’s Head Meadow, and I will try my best to move those projects forward.

“I will continue to support our groups and organisations and to work with other local councils and statutory bodies to help drive Wymondham forward while retaining its special character.”

Mr Savage has been a town councillor since 2011, and was previously mayor for the 2012/13 term. He is also a South Norfolk district councillor, having served as a Conservative for Abbey ward since 2007.

Mr Savage, 61, is a semi-retired, self-employed structural engineer, and also works as an exam invigilator at Wymondham College.

Also at the meeting, Tony Holden was elected to be deputy mayor for the 2017/18 term, receiving nine votes, ahead of Kevin Hurn, who received six votes.

Mr Savage said Play England was due to brief the town council on the results of its inspection of King’s Head Meadow next week.
