A new charity is being launched to give people with disabilities the chance to experience the thrill of motor sport.

Pat Ward, from Wymondham, who himself has a disability and cannot legally drive, is setting up the Disabled Racing Drivers Car Club.

Mr Ward said the drives would mostly take place at Snetterton Circuit, and potentially at other race tracks including Brands Hatch in Kent and Oulton Park in Cheshire.

He said: 'We want to give the disabled a fun-filled day out. The cars will have adaptations on them so people with disabilities can drive.

'Those who can't will be able to do passenger rides with an experienced driver. We'll try to make it a fun, relaxing, and most of all rewarding day out.'

He said the club would be a charity, relying on donations and sponsorship from the public as well as money raised at fundraising events.

The club will be open to anybody regardless of whether they are disabled or not, and the hope is it will allow people to try circuit racing, rallying and autocross, as well as get an insight into the 'behind-the-scenes' jobs there are in motor sport.

Mr Ward said the club would also organise tours of motor sport centres, and monthly social nights.

He said: 'We will try to do as many days as we can depending on funding and track availability.'

The club's ambassadors include Phil Armes, a motorcyclist from Hellesdon who broke his back during qualifications for the Ulster Grand Prix, and now rides an adapted bike.

Other ambassadors are motor racer Martin Donnelly and Norfolk singer Hayley Moss.

The new club will be launched at the Hethel Engineering Centre on January 27 at 7pm.

Mr Ward said: 'All local businesses, police, councils, disabled support groups and the general public are invited.

'This is an informal evening for young and old to come and talk and see how we can make a difference to your life.

'You will meet like-minded people who want to get involved and have some rewarding and fun times.'
