Man called Tank proposes to girlfriend in North Walsham vaping shop - live on Facebook
Archant Norfolk 2017
It’s not the obvious choice of venue, but a man proposed to his betrothed in a vaping shop in North Walsham.
It was a suitably smoky atmosphere when Simon Rooney, known as Tank, got down on one knee to Lisa St Pierre.
He popped the question ‘Would you?’, at the Vapologists in Market Street.
She said “Yes” and Tank’s best friend, Dave Clarke, who runs the shop, promptly started to cry, although he denies that.
The couple, who have known each other for about a year and have children of their own, have not yet set a date for the big day, but it should be some time next year.
Mr Rooney, 37, an ex-doorman at the Kings Arms hotel in the town and a carer, said: “We had got a ring in Norwich that morning. Dave is my best mate. I was nervous but as I was with my mate, it just felt the right time to propose.
“I got down on one knee and said ‘Would you’. And Lisa said ‘Yes, alright, suppose so’ or something like that.
“We did it on Facebook Live. I don’t know how many people watched it, but we got a lot of comments afterwards, mainly just ‘congratulations’ and ‘lucky couple’, and all that.”
The bride-to-be, 39, said: “We had got the ring and I was expecting some kind of proposal at some time, but not there and then in the shop. But I had no hesitation in accepting the proposal.
Mr Clarke said: “There cannot be many stranger places to propose. I have never heard of anyone proposing in a vaping shop. They come in to the shop quite a lot. Tank got me into vaping as I was a 70-a-day man.
“I was with my wife Emma and a friend, George Rust, known as Rusty.
“Tank got down on one knee and popped the question. It took us all by surprise. “
Mr Clarke presented the happy couple, who live together in Mundesley, with a bouquet of flowers and a hat from the shop.
