Got milk? These children certainly do and to celebrate they took part in World School Milk Day yesterday, part of an international celebration which encourages children to drink milk and teaches them about its benefits.

Northwold Primary School in Upper Clapton, Hackney, was one among thousands of schools and nurseries across 30 countries taking part in the awareness day on Wednesday, September 26.

In the UK school children under five-years-old still receive free cartons of milk, although this is currently under government review in a bid to cut the scheme’s £53million annual cost.

Diane Abbott MP, shadow minister for public health and a stern defender of the nursery milk scheme, attended the school’s event, saying: “With one in six children going to school hungry, school milk represents a sensible way of providing young children with vital nutrition that can help improve their concentration and performance at school.”

She added: “The government needs to understand that if they want to snatch milk away from schools and nurseries, they’ve got a fight on their hands.”

John Sedgwick, managing director of Cool Milk, the UK’s leading supplier to schools, insisted that milk is vital in helping children to develop important nutrition and social habits.

“Milk in schools continues to be incredibly popular and hugely successful in contributing to the healthy development of all children, but especially those from underprivileged backgrounds,” he said.
