A supermarket firm has moved to end any uncertainty over its plans by restating its commitment to building a store in Cromer - and opening it as soon as next spring.

Six months after Lidl closed the BP filling station on Holt Road, concerns were being voiced locally about whether there had been a delay to the plan to build a supermarket there.

But Lidl PR manager Clare Norman said Lidl remained “committed to Cromer”.

She added: “Construction hoarding will commence in the next seven days with demolition starting in October.

“Site construction works are programmed to commence early November 2012 to provide a new Lidl foodstore and relocated Subway unit. Both outlets will open late spring 2013.”

Subway, which had continued trading behind the derelict filling station for six months, has now closed. It will reopen as a smaller outlet attached to Lidl.

The cut-price German-owned supermarket is set to be 1,063m sq, with a 74m sq Subway and 66 car parking spaces. It will add to competition in Cromer, which already has a Co-Op, Morrisons, Budgens and Iceland.

The closure of the BP filling station left Cromer with two others - Morrisons and East Coast Motors on Beach Road.

The move led to concerns about queues at the Morrisons filling station on Prince of Wales Road.
