A Norwich couple have welcomed their new baby daughter into the world after the mother gave birth in the snow.
The drama unfolded when Anna Stasiow went into labour at the couple’s Thorpe Hamlet home on Monday. Together with her husband Marek, the 30-year-old headed to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
But as the couple walked to their car, they soon realised it was too late and the baby was on its way.
With the help of an ambulance service call handler who talked him through the process, Mr Stasiow delivered his second daughter, Nina, in the snow in the courtyard outside their home.
The 33-year-old, who lives in Providence Place, off Quebec Road, said: “It was terrifying. It was really cold and it all happened so quickly.
“We didn’t have time to get Anna back in the house and within 10 minutes, the baby was here. It was a bit of a panic and the man on the end of the phone kept me calm.
“It was really scary, when I think back and remember it, I feel scared inside me. But everything worked out okay in the end and we are all happy and we have a beautiful and healthy baby girl.”
Soon after baby Nina, who weighed 7lb 7oz, was born, a rapid response vehicle clinician arrived, followed by paramedics in an ambulance who took Mr and Mrs Stasiow and their newborn daughter to the N&N’s maternity unit.
In an added twist to the story, East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust worker Dan Apps, who offered help on the phone, was in just his third week in the job.
Mr Apps said: “I have to admit it was the call I was most nervous about happening.
“I’d been fine dealing with cardiac problems and other serious calls but this was seeing a new life into the world, it was a huge responsibility but also really exciting at the same time.
“It was great to be able to help deliver the baby but there was a huge sigh of relief afterwards.”

I have heard of Water births, but not Snow births ? Will the NHS do anything to save a few pounds ?

A happy ending fortunately but it might not have been. I wonder if Mrs Stasiow is one of the many whose admission to hospital had been delayed by the currrent practice of telling women in labour not to go into hospital until their contractions are less than 5 minutes apart. I heard of one recently who was told not to go in until contractions were 3 minutes apart. With a second baby this could be running things a bit close, especially if there is a journey of any distance. Of course this is all down to overcrowding on maternity units but one wonders who is making these decisions, whether it has been a deliberate and properly researched decision or whether it has been made by the same bright sparks who introduced putting babies on their stomachs to sleep. And we all know what happened after that.
