A woman whose body was found in the river by a rower near Whitlingham Broad was from the Norwich area, police have revealed.
The body of the woman, who has not been named but who was 47, was discovered in the River Yare, off Whitlingham Lane, on Friday morning sparking a police investigation.
The death was initially treated as unexplained although officers from Norwich CID found there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the woman who has since been identified.
The woman is expected to be named later this week by the coroner who is likely to open an inquest into her death in the next few days.
As previously reported the body was found at about 8.10am by a rower who was on an early morning training exercise.
Charlie Beech, 19, of Earlham Road, Norwich, captain of the men’s rowing team at the UEA Boat Club, said he was “shocked” to have made such a find.
He said: “It was shocking for all of us, especially as the body hit our boat.”
The UEA team Boat Club set off along the Yare at around 7.45am.
He said: “Firstly we rowed passed the body unaware as it was so dark at that time in the morning.
“When we came back the body hit the side of the boat, but at that point it was still dark so we thought it was a log or branch, as it is quite common to hit something like that.
“We then rowed back again for the third time down the River Yare but at this point it was starting to get quite light and our coach – who was in the speed boat – steered passed and that’s when we noticed it.
“I stopped to look and saw a body – it was face down in the water with its back showing.”
Mr Beech described the body as that of a woman in her mid 20s, with short blonde hair and wearing a blue shirt.
The police were called as soon as the team made the discovery at around 8.10am and within minutes the emergency services were on the scene.
Both police officers and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service personnel attended to recover her body.
