Firefighters were called from Earlham, Carrow and Sprowston fire stations to the blaze in Devonshire Place, at the end of Devonshire Street, at about 2.30pm yesterday.

A woman, who has not been named, was rescued from the property and was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.

A spokesman for Norfolk Police said today that the woman in her 40s died in hospital as a result of her injuries.

“Police and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service are investigating the circumstances around the fire but can confirm they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

“A file will be submitted to Her Majesty’s Coroner in due course.”

Three appliances from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service attended and were at the scene for just over an hour. They wore breathing apparatus and used hose reel jets to extinguish.

Duncan Ashworth, station manager of Earlham station, said fire investigation officers from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and a forensics team from Norfolk Police had begun an investigation into the blaze, which was contained to the living room of the flat.

“We sent three fire appliances to a report of a flat fire. They made entry and extinguished the fire and found one casualty who was removed. She had certain medical issues that were dealt with at the scene and she was taken to hospital.”

“If there have been injuries as a result of a fire, there is a high level investigation to establish the cause,” he said.

The air ambulance from Magpas Helmedix was called, but was stood down on arrival.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said two ambulances and an ambulance officer attended.
