A woman has died after falling from a flyover on the A47 at Longwater, just outside Norwich, at around 3am yesterday morning.

Police said a white Vauxhall Vivaro was involved, and they have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information.

Officers closed the eastbound lanes of the A47 at the A1074 junction, causing long tailbacks and delays for morning commuters.

The lanes reopened at around 12.30pm.

Police said the woman, who was in her 40s, sadly died at the scene.

People shared their sadness about the incident on this newspaper's Facebook page.

Janet Bayes wrote: 'May the poor woman Rest in Peace. Let's hope witnesses will come forward.'

Rachel Rivers posted: 'Thoughts are with the family.

'It's an awful time x.'

Motorists travelling to Norwich from the Dereham direction faced delays of up to an hour and traffic queued back for about three miles on the A47.

Traffic on the eastbound dual carriageway was diverted off at the Longwater junction and across the roundabouts and back on the A47.

Many drivers found their own diversions through villages such as Mattishall, East Tuddeham, Colton, Easton and Ringland and long tailbacks build up on back roads during the rush hour.

Vehicles heading west were unaffected by the closure.

The incident also caused delays for bus users.

Konektbus advised commuters to expect delays on routes 4, 5 and 8.

A police spokesman said: 'At 3am police attended an incident on the A47 at Longwater, along with colleagues from the ambulance service.'

The spokesman advised motorists to avoid the area as much as possible, as long queues formed on roads around the scene.

He added: 'The A47 eastbound is closed at the Longwater junction and all traffic is being diverted around the scene using the slip roads.

'Heavy congestion is expected as traffic volumes increase during the course of the morning.'

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident should contact the police's serious collision investigation team on 101.
