Will this be Christmas number one? - Norfolk fire station creates ‘Last Christmas’ safety music video

A crew of firefighters hopes to knock famous popstars off the Christmas number one spot with their new festive single all about fire safety.

The team at Diss Fire Station has created the Christmas music video giving safety tips surrounding the festive season, based on Last Christmas by Wham!

With lyrics warn about dangers that increase at this time of year, including leaving candles and festive lights unattended, testing smoke alarms and drink driving.

Firefighter Harry Powell said: “Last year we did a quick video, so this year we wanted to follow it up with a bit more time and effort.

“We wanted to do a full song and music video to promote fire safety and road safety over the festive period.

“We see an increase in drink drivers and people will need to be extra careful when cooking the Christmas turkey.”

The video promotes the Fatal Four campaign launched by Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Constabulary, Safety Camera Partnership, Fire and Rescue Service and the Highways Agency.

It focuses on wearing a seat belt, slowing down, driving sober and not using mobile phones.

Mr Powell added: “We have had a really good reaction. The video has gone up on YouTube and Facebook, which has received a huge amount of shares.

“I think it is largely due to the humour but obviously we are getting across a very important message.”

In five days, the video has received more than 30,000 views.

This is the second video the crew has created. Last year they sang the 12 Days of Safe Christmas but the crew wanted to go “all-out” for this year’s festive period.

Mr Powell said: “We set a challenge last year to do something and it had such a positive reaction that we thought: ‘We have to follow this up and beat last year’s views.’

“We might have a go and see if we can beat this song next year.”

The song took six hours to write and took a day spent filming. In total, around 15 hours was put into the work.

The video features the complete crew from the Diss stations, as well as the cadets.
