Wells is set to get its first petrol station for several years after councillors approved plans to build one in the town today.
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) development committee voted in-line with the planning officer’s recommendation to approve the Lindum Group’s proposal.
The petrol station is planned to be built on Polka Road, next to where a new £3.75m Anglia Co-operative supermarket has already been approved.
Coach parking is currently available at Polka Road and the petrol station approval was granted on the condition that the development committee writes to NNDC’s estate department and cabinet to request alternative coach parking provision in the town.
It is hoped a new petrol station could have a positive impact on town traders as it is believed having no petrol station in Wells often means people shopping else where.
The Lindum Group said during its public consultation 96pc of people questioned were in favour of the petrol station.
A driver had to be rescued from a river in Thetford after the Ford Focus he was travelling in came off the road.

As regular holiday visitors to wells the new supermarket proposals are to be very wary of. The Co-op have recently opened a mini store in the village I live in on the outskirts of Halifax. In the 5 months it has been operating it has contributed to closeing a long established local supermarket, off licence, 40 year established butchers and a sweet shop. They are ruthless are these supermarkets Keep on your toes with them.

Great! Just what Wells needs. A local told me there used to be seven petrol stations in Wells. I certainly remember 3 of them.
