When the green inflatable kayak was spotted a mile north of Burnham Overy Staithe by onlookers on the beach this afternoon, it had been feared two people were in the water.

The Wells inshore was launched at about 1pm and was at the scene within 20 minutes. The crew retrieved the kayak but no one was on board or in the area.

The all-weather lifeboat was then launched to assist the search for the missing people but it was stood down when the pair were found safe on the shore.

Lifeboat operations manager Chris Hardy said: “From the land it looked as if there were two people on board and you can’t take chances with situations like this. I am pleased that it all ended well in this case.”
