Weather update: Norfolk continues to shiver as police praise sensible drivers

Temperatures across Norfolk plummeted overnight, but fears there would be a spate of crashes in slippery conditions failed to materialise.

Gritters took to Norfolk’s roads last night as temperatures fell.

Temperatures were down to minus seven degrees in parts of the county and dipped to almost minus six in Norwich.

But forecasters at University of East Anglia-based Weatherquest said the wind had picked up last night and, coupled with cloud cover, temperatures got warmer.

Norfolk police said there had been five crashes on the county’s roads this morning, but none were serious and ice did not seem to have been a factor in any of them.

A police spokeswoman said people seemed to be heading the advice to drive with caution and to allow extra time for their journeys.

There was some disruption on the trains. A fault led to the cancellation of the 7.35am Lowestoft to Norwich service, which led to delays on other services from Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.

People in the county are in for another chilly day, with temperatures expected to remain around freezing today.

Forecasters at Weatherquest, based at the University of East Anglia, have said the rest of the week is also likely to be cold, but more snow looks unlikely.

Chris Bell said: “It’s not looking likely that we are going to see much more snow. It’s looking dry with all this cold air around. We may see the odd flurry but it wouldn’t amount to anything you would notice.”

Just two schools in Norfolk are closed today.

Hapton CE VC Primary School is shut because the boiler has failed, so the school cannot be heated, while Sidestrand Hall School has suffered a major electrical fault.

Work to fix the problem is continuing, but in the meantime there will be no heating. Staff have been told to head into school, but pupils will get the day off.

The school has apologised to parents and thanked them for their support and understanding.

It`s the sensible drivers in Sheringham that, after almost a Lunar month, cannot fathom the new one-way system. Including the police, by the confession of one of their own. No promotion there, then? Unless his Dad`s a Mason, of course.

It's very patronising to suggest that people need advice to enable them to drive with caution - drivers have eyes , and are able to see when driving conditions are poor. I think you mean "heeding" not "heading" too.
