Work has started again on patching up Cromer’s storm ravaged pier after contractors moved back onto its decking over the weekend.

Workmen from FPE Global are repairing the holes that were knocked into the wooden walkways by the huge waves that pounded the Victorian attraction on December 5.

And clearance of the flooded cafe, shop and box office has also started, after insurers for pier management group Openwide Coastal gave the green light for work to begin.

Electrical items were stripped from the buildings over the weekend with clearance work set to pick up again on Wednesday and Thursday.

After the buildings are stripped the floors will be lifted so a full structural survey can be carried out, paving the way for repairs to begin.

Pier staff have said there is currently no time scale for the repair work, but they hope it can start as soon as possible.

Rebecca Wass, general manager, said: “It is at this moment impossible to give a finishing date for any of the work but I am extremely grateful to North Norfolk District Council for all the work they have done so far.

“Once we have the buildings clear and the floors lifted we will have a much better idea of what to do next.

“In the meantime it is business as usual although the walk to purchase tickets is a little further than normal, I am sure our patrons will find it worthwhile.” Michael Holmes, who is working on the decking, estimated it would take around three months to restore the walkway as steel beams, as well as the wooden slats, needed replacing.

Further along the promenade council contractors are continuing to shore up the cliffs, which were stripped of topsoil and grass by the huge surge, and carry out drainage works.

Upcoming shows at the pier include Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber on March 1, the Essence of Ireland on March 21 and the Stars of Strictly Come Dancing on March 27.
