Weather latest: Snow set to fall in Norfolk this evening ahead of a chilly weekend

17:03 08 February 2013

Snow is forecast to fall in Norfolk this evening but there are no local predictions for heavy snowfall this weekend.

"In some places the snow could be heavy enough to settle and make driving a little bit difficult for a while this evening."

Weatherquest forecaster Jim Bacon.

Norfolk County Council is sending out gritters at 7pm and will continue to do so through the night if necessary, a spokesman has confirmed.

Jim Bacon, forecaster for University of East Anglia-based Weatherquest, said: “Quite a lot of cloud over the county at the moment and there will be some outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow.

“In fact in some places the snow could be heavy enough to settle and make driving a little bit difficult for a while this evening.”

Temperatures are expected to stay just above freezing for most of the weekend and the Met Office has a yellow alert for snow in place for Sunday and early Monday, warning people to ‘be aware’.

Mr Bacon said tonight will be cloudy with snow showers and, where the skies clear, temperatures could get down to -2C and created “widespread frost” and icy patches.

He continued: “For tomorrow (Saturday), rather cloudy with some light rain or drizzle at times, particularly at first, but it should become a little bit drier later on.

“The maximum temperature around about 5C in a light west or south-westerly wind, so that’s 5C, just a degree or so up on today.

“As for Sunday, that will be a mainly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain spreading up from the south-west that will become heavy and quite prolonged, so a wet and windy end to Sunday.

“There could just be a little bit of sleet or snow on the front edge of the rain as it arrives but eventually turning back to rain again.

“By the time we get to Monday the area of low pressure nearby so rather cloudy with some rain, perhaps turning to snow at times but in general slowly becoming drier and brighter as the day goes on.”
