The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Norfolk after it predicted 2-5cm of snow could fall this afternoon, with up to 8cm in coastal areas.

The snow has already begun to settle in parts of Suffolk, and is moving north towards the Norfolk border.

Snowdrifts were reported to be causing delays on two north Norfolk roads: the A149 North Walsham Road in Thorpe Market, and the B1354 between the Corpusty junction and the Briston junction.

Forecasters at Norwich-based Weather Quest said the latest downfall will be likely to stick around until about 7pm.

Arriving from the south, it will bring between 2cm and 5cm of snow all over the region before clearing away for a cold and frosty night.

Phil Garner, Weather Quest forecaster at its University of East Anglia base this weekend, said the snow was already at Wattisham and Lakenheath. He added: 'I don't think it will be great amounts – we're predicting 2cm to 5cm. It's hard to know what the nature of the snow is going to be but there's some fairly cold air with it so it is likely to stick.'

In an early afternoon update, First Buses said it was operating a normal Sunday service on most routes, but the 13/13A/13B is not serving the Attleborough estates, the 14/14A is not serving the Silfield or Wymondham estates, while the 23B/23A is only expected to operate as far as Queens Hill.

It said there were not reported disruptions to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth services or the X1.

It said it would not know the impact on services tomorrow until it had checked roads in the morning.

Anglian Bus said all Sunday buses are operating normally, except the 10 which is not serving Cuckoofield Lane, the 123 which is not serving Thieves Lane or the Bell, and the 587 which is not serving the estate or church, and is turning at Budgens.

Norfolk Green said all buses were still running normally at 11.30am, expect Burnham Overy Staithe, but advised passengers to get to their destinations quickly because of snow expected later.

Sanders Coaches said it would tweet tomorrow if there were any problems that would affect its services.

Greater Anglia said it was running planned services on all routes, and scheduled engineering works would take place on some routes.

Yesterday evening, Jarrold department store in Norwich decided it would close today because of the weather.

In a statement posted at its entrance, it said: 'This store is closed today due to adverse weather conditions.

'We apoloise for any inconvenience caused and aim to resume normal trading hours tomorrow.'

This morning, a spokesman said the decision had been made 'with the best interests of everyone in mind'.

She added: 'We took the decision to close the store today due to the forecasts of adverse weather conditions which would make it difficult for both staff and customers.

'Part of the decision was because we were due to do stock taking later in the day so we decided to close the store to let that stock take happen earlier which means we will have no staff trying to get home later this evening.'

Customer numbers at the department store, on the corner of London Street in Norwich, have been 'significantly down' all this week because of the snow and Jarrolds said it had not expected many visitors during the day if it had opened.

The spokesman added: 'If it causes any inconvenience, we are sorry. But those decisions were made with the best interests of everyone in mind.'

Norfolk County Council sent its gritters out at 5pm last night and again at 12.30am to prepare roads for the icy temperatures, which will continue to be below freezing throughout today – although coastal areas should just about reach zero degrees. The next gritting run should begin at around 1pm today.

A council spokesman said all A-roads, B-roads and the most important C-roads would be treated over the course of about three hours. After that the gritting team will carry out a review and decide when the next run is needed and whether the snow ploughs are needed.

Norfolk county council said 10 of its 20 main recycling centres are closed today. The sites affected are at: Bergh Apton, Dereham, Docking, Heacham, Hempton, Mayton Wood, Morningthorpe, Snetterton, Wells and Wereham.

Mr Garner said: 'For Monday and Tuesday there are still some light snow showers around. For Wednesday and Thursday it's drier and brighter but not a great deal warmer. Temperatures by Wednesday up to about three degrees. We're expecting a change to milder conditions next weekend but that's likely to be only temporary.'
