Thousands of school pupils and students in north Suffolk enjoyed the day off today thanks to the snow as dozens of schools and colleges closed.

But for one small Suffolk primary school it was a case of “We are open for business as usual” as it remained the only school in the Lowestoft and Southwold area to beat the snow.

Reydon Primary School at Reydon, near Southwold, opened thanks to determined staff and its head teacher Gary Draper.

Mr Draper arrived at the building in Jermyn’s Road at 6.05am to help clear snow away from paths to make sure his school opened.

And teachers travelled as far as Felixstowe to get to their class rooms.

About 50c of its 190 pupils managed to turn up for lessons and two teachers.

were not able to get to Reydon because of the snow causing problems.

Mr Draper, who has been at the school for 11 years, said: “I have very determined staff here who wanted to come in.

“I was in at 6.05am helping the caretaker to clear pathways.

“In my time here we have only closed two or three times because of the weather.”

Mr Draper did joke that he not sure if all his pupils were “pleased” the school was only one to remain open in the Lowestoft and Southwold area.

He did add that today’s weather conditions would be used as part of the children’s classes.

As well as every other primary school and high school in the area closing, Lowestoft College and Lowestoft Sixth Form College were also shut yesterday for lessons due to the weather conditions.
