Airport workers were up as early as 4am clearing runways of snow to try and ensure flights to and from the city’s airport could run.

Norwich Airport enacted its winter operations plan as temperatures dropped to as low as -6C, with staff spending five hours clearing the runway.

Richard Pace, managing director of the airport, said the runway opened by 9.30am on Tuesday, February 27 but that flights to Manchester, Edinburgh and Amsterdam were delayed.

Two flights going to and from Aberdeen were cancelled.

Mr Pace said: “It’s not just a case of clearing the snow once. Because it’s falling, more accumulates and you just have to keep working.

“It’s not like a road. Once we decide to close a runway we have to get it completely clear of snow before we open it again. It’s a busy day.”

Mr Pace urged passengers to keep checking the airport website for updates on www.norwichairport.co.uk
