Air pollution has returned to low levels today after a spell of smog across the region.

Last night fresher air finally pushed the smog away, which was caused by dust sweeping in from the Sahara Desert, and winds being too light to shift pollution from cars and industry in the UK.

Jim Bacon, of Weatherquest which is based at the University of East Anglia, said: “It cleared away and the fresher air came in yesterday evening and it finally got pushed away out across the North Sea.”

He said the the Saharan dust pollution was now over south eastern Europe.

And it looks today (Saturday) will be the best day to get out and about.

Mr Bacon said: “It’s a good day today, but it will cloud up a bit as we go through the day.

“It will be cloudier tomorrow with some patches of rain, breezy and rather cloudy, but a fairly mild day.

“There will be some more rain at times on Monday, then a clear day on Tuesday with the odd shower and high pressure coming back in again for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with perhaps a shower or two on Friday.”

  • What smog, it was misty with low cloud just like we have for weeks on end sometimes.
