The water company was alerted to the water escaping near the cemetery in Heywood Avenue at 5am, which was believed to have affected hundreds of properties in the area.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said engineers had carried out repairs and had shut off the valve early on to prevent water escaping, but she could not estimate how many homes had been affected though the company had only received seven calls.
