Holidaymakers on a weekend break were interrupted when a dog discovered what is believed to be an unexploded mortar at a West Runton caravan park.
Police cordoned off the area at the Camping and Caravanning Club site on Holgate Lane, between Sheringham and Cromer, after they were called at noon.
Holiday site assistant Ian Cragg said the dog, which he said was a spaniel, was scratching around and pulled out the mortar.
He said: “The gentleman who owned the dog recognised what it was.”
The unexploded mortar was found near the centre of the site with caravans and tents pitched nearby.
Mr Cragg said: “Somebody could have been banging their tent pegs into it.”
Personnel from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team went to the scene and assessed the item, and a controlled detonation took place around 5.25pm.
The cordon has since been lifted from the area.
