A “Walter Mitty” type character was found to have a “pipe bomb making kit” hidden in his bedroom, although no attempt had ever been made to make any device, a court heard.

Kane Woodward, 24, was found to have components which could have been used to make an improvised explosive device and also had a stun gun and instructions for building a pipe bomb, Norwich Crown Court was told.

Charles Falk, prosecuting said Woodward also had a list of people he had a problem with.

Mr Falk said the bomb-making kit was found in a safe in the bedroom at his Albion Road home, in Great Yarmouth.

Police discovered the equipment after they found him with cannabis and made a search of his address.

However the court heard that Woodward had been a victim of bullying and had no intention of ever building any device.

Woodward admitted possession of an explosive substance, and a stun gun and also possession of cannabis with a street value of about £1000.

Michael Clare, for Woodward, said “He is something of a Walter Mitty character. It is not as sinister as it might seem. He is a stupid boy rather than a sophisticated criminal. He needs help improving his social skills.”

He said that Woodward had been a victim of bullying in the past.

Jailing him for 18 months, Judge Stephen Holt accepted that he had been “stupid” rather than a dangerous criminal.”
