Walcott man stole iPad containing cherished photos of ex-girlfriend’s London 2012 Olympic torchbearer daughter, court told

17:34 14 March 2014

A man stole an iPad containing his ex-girlfriend’s cherished memories of her daughter’s time as a London 2012 Olympic torchbearer, a court heard.

David Andrews, 31, of The Walkway, Walcott, sold the device at a second-hand shop and it has not been recovered, Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard today.

The torchbearer photos had not been backed up elsewhere and have been lost forever, the prosecution said.

Andrews admitted stealing a £400 iPad from one ex-partner and stealing an iPad, XBox Connect, iPod and DS Lite games console to the value of £768 from a second ex-partner.

He also pleaded guilty to selling some of the items fraudulently for a gain of £210.

The court heard his ex-partner’s daughter had been ill in hospital and the iPad had been a source of comfort to her.

Andrews, who was unrepresented, had reported that a lodger stole the items, but was discovered when police rumbled his false story about being a former Royal Marine.

He told the court: “A lot of it was to impress people.

“I do apologise and I do feel bad for that.”

District judge Peter Veits committed the case to Norwich Crown Court for sentence on a date to be fixed.
