When he walks down the street in his home country of Kazakhstan, Kanat Auyesbay is stopped in the street – because he is an anchorman on national television.

But it’s a different story when he wanders the precincts of the University of East Anglia where Mr Auyesbay is just another student facing the challenges of exams.

He is famous at home for hosting talk shows and reading news bulletins, but don’t confuse him with fictional-television-personality, Borat.

The 32-year-old said: “Everybody just imagines I am like Borat, but I am a news presenter.”

Mr Auyesbay had his first brush with media as a child, when his blind grandfather asked a six-year-old Kanat to read him the newspapers.

“After this, I used to steal the newspapers from my neighbour’s letter box,” he said. “Not because I wanted to read the articles but because I liked the smell.”

He has been living in Norwich with his wife Bayan, 30, and six-year-old son, Yeraly, who is a pupil at Recreation Road Primary School.

And his studies here are sponsored by his government’s future programme, which covers the cost of his tuition and living costs.

On Friday, he took a trip to the EDP’s offices to share his experiences and took a tour of the Mustard TV studio.

He said: “It’s good experience for me to see a local press organisation and television station.

“It’s interesting how you produce news and information in Norwich.”

He hopes to use the skills he’s learnt in Norwich to host his own show in English when he returns home.

He said: “I love being here but I miss my job and my viewers.”

“I am a bit of a celebrity, people do know who I am.”
