The old saying goes “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again” – and that adage proved true for the organisers of a village fete when they invited Stephen Fry along.

The comedian and writer will this weekend attend the Narborough Village Fair. Now in its fifth year, the community event will include a fun dog show, a collection of stalls, crafts, baton twirlers, children’s fairground rides and more.

Mr Fry, who has a Norfolk home close to Narborough, will present the prizes for the classic cars and motorcycles, and the static engines.

David Burchell, secretary of Narborough Village Fair committee, said: “We knew he is very keen on supporting local events and this is the fifth year we have run the fair. We have asked him every other year but he has been out of the country or away with work. This year was the first year he was able to come along.”

He added: “We all admire him as a person and we’ve always thought he would be a good person to have along. We hope he will come along and have a jolly good time. It will be nice to have him present a couple of the prizes.”

The summer fair, held at Narborough’s community centre on Chalk Lane, attracts up to 1,000 people, and some 2,500 people have already ‘liked’ its Facebook page.

One of the prizes which will be presented by QI host Mr Fry is a model Lister engine which has been made by and donated by one of the villagers.

The event will raise funds for the community centre and for Norfolk’s Lowland Search and Rescue.

Mr Burchell said: “The numbers seems to increase every year and get more and more people from outside of the village. It goes down well every year and we have good feedback.”
