A group of brave fund-raisers have taken a social media charity challenge to another level after taking part in a mass ice bucket challenge.

More than 75 people took up the ALS ice bucket challenge in the car park of the Deer’s Leap pub in Thetford on Wednesday.

And in a twist on the challenge - which has seen participants including Russell Brand, David Beckham, Jeremy Clarkson and Carol Vorderman - the fund-raisers not only poured buckets of ice water over themselves, but were then sprayed with hoses by crews from Thetford Fire Service.

The participants were answering a call from Zumba instructor, Lou Freezer, with money going to the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND), and to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (Each), Great Ormond Street Hospital and Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

Ms Freezer, who also had a hand in a mass flash mob in Tesco three years ago that went viral online, said she had been overwhelmed by the response to her plea for help.

“I was watching all these challenges online and if I’m honest I was hoping I wouldn’t get challenged.

“But when I did I just thought I would get as many people as I could to do it with me. I do a lot of work in Thetford and there’s a lot of community spirit here and the response was amazing,” she said.

Ms Freezer said she had picked the other three charities besides MND as members of her Zumba group had used their services in the last year.

Those taking part in the challenge are encouraged to donate £5 to MND. Ms Freezer said at least £100 was also raised through bucket collections during the challenge.

In keeping with the spirit of the ALS challenge, Ms Freezer picked out three more groups to take part in the challenge - Norwich City Football Club, Ipswich Town Football Club, and Thetford Fire Service.
