It had served Southwold and its surrounding villages since 1965.

But the town’s former fire station was reduced to rubble this week when a demolition crew from contractor SEH French moved in to pull it down.

A workman with a digger began taking apart the building in Station Road on Monday.

The machine made short work of the almost 50-year-old structure, levelling most of it by the end of Tuesday.

A team had already spent last week disconnecting services at the site and preparing it for demolition.

The aim is to have the plot clear by the end of the month.

The building had been empty since October, when Southwold’s retained fire service relocated to a new, purpose-built base in Fountain Way, Reydon.

The plot is currently valued at £657,000 and the proceeds from the sale will go towards the costs of the new fire station.

A Suffolk County Council spokesman said the authority’s investment in the new Reydon and Southwold community fire station had resulted in “real, tangible improvements”, including technological enhancements and an advanced fire sprinkler system.

The new station also includes improved disabled access, better welfare facilities for female and male firefighters and a community room.

■ Suffolk County Council is currently recruiting on-call firefighters for Reydon and Southwold. Applicants will need to live and/or work in the Reydon and Southwold area. For an informal discussion and more information, contact Russell Punchard on 01473 260588 or speak to Mr Bedford-Cuffe on 07766002234. The closing date is February 10.
