More than 100 members of the public joined nurses, veterans and civic leaders at a poignant remembrance service for nurse and First World War martyr Edith Cavell.

The service at her grave at Norwich Cathedral took place this morning, one day before the 99th anniversary of her execution by a German firing squad.

In his address, The Rev Paul Burr, vicar of Swardeston, near Norwich, where Miss Cavell was born, said that by her own evidence she helped more than 200 soldiers escape through enemy lines while working at her nurse training school in Belgium.

He said: “Why do we remember Edith Cavell? We remember her as a martyr. That word has today been hijacked by an ideology of terror, but to Christians a martyr is someone utterly peaceable, someone who witnesses by their death their faith in Christ.”

The participant sang hymns to music played by the Norwich Salvation Army Citadel Band, and dignitaries laid the wreaths at the cross marking Miss Cavell’s grave, before the Last Post was played and followed by a moment’s silence.

  • Pity that the young woman reading the Radio Norfolk news this morning , didn`t know how to pronounce Swardeston .This was followed by a man who couldn`t say Herzegovina at all while reading the sports bulletin . He just gave up .Amateurish .
