A record number of runners entered to battle it out in the annual Lord Mayor’s 5km City Centre Classic Road Race.

129 racers smashed last year’s 109 – and organisers were pleased that every entrant finished the course.

The 19th annual event began before the Lord Mayor’s Procession rolled through the city and large crowds gathered along the route to watch, clap and cheer all the runners as they completed the legendary parade route.

Kenyan Peter Emase, 20, stormed to victory passing the finish line in 14 minutes and 22 seconds.

It is his first time running in Norwich, but Mr Emase said he was so impressed by the course, he might return next year.

“I love running so much, I am so lucky it’s my job,” he said.

The women’s winner was Gladys Ruto who completed the course in 16 minutes and 46 seconds.

Richard Polley, from City of Norwich Athletic Club which organises the race, said: “This year was as good it has ever been. It’s such an inspiring place to have a run.”

Once of the hundreds of spectators was Jon Quinto, from Dussindale, who took his son Ben, 10, along to the race before the big parade.

“It was a really exciting race to watch,” he said.

Alison Haynes, 35, a radiographer from Coltishall, said she was enjoying soaking up the supportive atmosphere.

And Mark Philo, the chairman of Tri-Anglia, a triathlon club, was cheering on four of his club members as they ran through both flat and some parts of the course.
