Competing last weekend at the Norfolk Easter Show, Demi Wright, from Hethersett VC Junior School, took first place in the Agility Club Small Starter’s Combined One and Two Challenge, by a margin of 12 seconds, in a class of over 30 other adult competitors.

Demi and her dog, Pipsqueak, began competing together in May and won two jumping classes last year. Their success last weekend at the Anglian Windows Sports and Social Club included two wins, a second place and a clear round.

She has now completed her first of seven grades in dog agility, a fast-growing sport which involves both owner and dog working together to complete a timed course of obstacles under the close watch of expert judges.

Demi’s mother, Melanie Wright, who recently achieved her grade seven, said: “Demi showed an interest in dog agility at the age of three, so I let her run an older dog which went at her speed.

“When Demi reached five we adopted Pipsqueak, a two-year-old papillon chihuahua rescue dog from Heathland Animal Sanctuary. Since then, Demi has worked hard to train Pip herself – they have a wonderful bond.”

Demi, who trains once a week at her mother’s agility club, Agility Ability, near Wymondham, said: “It was fantastic.

“I am very proud and happy to be in grade two.

“In the future, I would like to look after homeless dogs and rescue dogs from abroad.”
