Celebrated actor John Hurt will today hand out degrees to the biggest ever cohort of graduates from the Norwich University of the Arts.
More than 560 students will graduate with degrees in the arts, design and media at three graduation ceremonies taking place at St Andrews Hall throughout the day.
Three honorary doctorates will be announced, and postgraduate students who completed their Masters degrees in 2013 will also collect their certificates in the ceremonies.
The star of The Elephant Man and The Naked Civil Servant will address the students, who completed courses in subjects such as fine art, graphic design, fashion, animation and photography, in his role as chancellor of the university.
He said: “I offer our graduates my congratulations on their accomplishment. Make no mistake, the creative process is demanding and they have earned their degrees through blood, sweat and tears.
“But now, as they enter the world of the creative industries, the hard work really starts. I can think of no better preparation than the teaching they have received in the last three years at Norwich University of the Arts.”
The 2014 cohort represents the university’s largest ever group of graduating students. NUA achieved university status in 2013 and celebrates the 170th anniversary of its foundation with a year of events starting this September.
Vice-chancellor John Last said: “The ceremonies provide an opportunity for the whole institution to celebrate the efforts, commitment and achievements of our graduates as they progress into a new phase of their lives, be it entering a vocation or continuing into postgraduate education.
“We expect many to achieve positions of influence within the creative industries and hope they will draw their final piece of inspiration from the distinguished careers of the honorary doctors.”
