Hotly-tipped Norwich funk band Killamonjambo is releasing its debut album tomorrow, after two years’ work in the studio.

The seven-piece recorded Fiesta Moonlanding at their manager’s countryside home studio, near New Buckenham.

Saxophonist Jonny Lawes, 25, said the group were all proud of the 12-track “party album”.

But asked for his initial thoughts on completing it, he joked: “It was a massive relief!”

The current line-up of the band, which has been gigging for around six years, is Jonny, drummer George Bensley, Fred Feeney on trumpet, singer Jamie Hagon, Luke Kerry on bass, Frank Youngs on lead guitar and Andy Vanzandt on trombone.

Recording the album was a lengthy process - not least as the band decided they were unhappy with the sound after a year’s work, scrapped it all and started again from scratch.

“We did it all ourselves,” said Jonny. “A lot of the time we started at midnight and finished at 7am, but it was really natural and a lot of good fun.”

The band made as much noise as they wanted until the early hours while recording - with no neighbours to annoy near their countryside studio.

Jonny explained that the album name was supposed to have a “comedy feel”, and was also influenced by the fact four band members had owned Ford Fiesta cars.

“It’s just a feel-good party album,” he added. “We hope people can turn it up really loudly and have a little dance in their bedroom.”

Oldest track Rip My Feet Away written around five years ago, while deeper tracks such as Fire and I were written more recently.

A launch party is being held at Norwich Arts Centre from 8pm tomorrow, with special guests.

Tickets are £6 in advance, £8 on the door and the album costs £5 on the night.

The group hailed manager Paul Wilson, at WRR Records, and everyone who helped make the album.
