Local band The Vagaband release their new album Medicine for the Soul later this month, and it has a gothic-themed twist.

The Vagaband formed in 2008 and currently have eight members, six of them living in Norwich, ranging from 20 to 50 years old.

The band play 14 instruments, including some that are slightly unusual, such as a mandolin, a flugelhorn and a marxophone.

José McGill, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, said: “Our music is a big amalgamation of a roots rock village band with influences from folk, jazz and blues.”

In The Alternate Root’s poll of Top 20 New Roots Bands of Europe the band was recently highly rated.

The Vagaband regularly haunts the Norwich music scene, playing gigs at The Crypt, Epic Studios and the Rose Tavern in the city.

Already critically acclaimed, the new album Medicine for the Soul, released on November 28, is influenced by Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

The Halloween theme begins in the track The Whistling Song whose video was filmed and edited by the band in Norwich and Southwold.

The band said: “Both celebratory and reflective, the initial optimism gradually gives way to darker tales inhabited by drunks, dead-end seaside towns and troubled souls.

“The centre piece is title track, Medicine For The Soul -– an ode to Townes Van Zandt with cinematic arrangements reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother and The Beatles’ I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”

With tours coming up next year in the UK and Holland, The Vagaband are incredibly excited to follow up their debut album Town and Country.

The album is released at The Blueberry pub in Norwich on November 28, and on November 30 in Farringdon, London.
