Fresh from playing international festivals with some of biggest names in pop, a home-grown Norwich beatboxer has now sets his sights on the charts.

Tom Povey – better known as Intensi-T – is preparing to release his first single since signing a record deal last year.

The tracks My Drums introduces the 21-year-old to the wider musical world, and includes references to his childhood relaxing on the Norfolk coast and performing at the Waterfront in Norwich.

The only instrument used on the single is Tom’s voice – recorded, looped and then layered over itself – and encapsulates the style he hopes will win over music fans.

He has already been rubbing shoulders with top pop stars, having returned from the Virgin Redfest DXB in Dubai, where he was performing alongside the likes of Conor Maynard, Rita Ora, Jessie J and Olly Murs.

“I wrote the single two years ago, before I signed my deal, so it’s been a long time coming.

“I want to show that I can write songs with my beatboxing skills, that it is more than just a gimmick, and that it can be popular in the mainstream.”

Tom grew up on Cadge Road until the age of 10, before his family moved to North Walsham, where they still live. As a beat-boxer, he cut his teeth in pubs and clubs around Norwich, and has played gigs at both the Waterfront and Open.

Describing himself as a one-man band, Tom says his mix of lyrics, beat-boxing and musical training offers something different to other acts out there.

“My Drums is quite a pop track, but that’s what I’ve always been like.

“The music has got a really fresh sound. The way I record it, with the high-quality techniques, means it has a really clean sound.”

Having got a taste of pop stardom in Dubai, Tom is keen to experience it again.

“It was surreal, being treated like a king and chauffeur-driven everywhere,” he said.

“When I came off stage, Olly Murs was in my dressing room, with Intensi-T on the door. When I was performing at the Sundown Festival in Norwich last year, I wasn’t allowed within 20 yards of him.”

My Drums will be released on April 27 and is available to pre-order from iTunes for 99p at
