Sporting Kansas City player Dom Dwyer took goal celebrations to the next level when he savoured the moment with a selfie.

After the striker – who grew up in King's Lynn – opened the scoring against Chicago Fire at the weekend, he grabbed a phone from a nearby photographer and snapped a selfie with team-mate Sonny Saad and a host of happy Sporting fans.

However, his creativity was not admired by referee Alan Kelly, who showed Dwyer a yellow card.

Dwyer scored in the 32nd minute of the MSL game when he robbed Chicago defender Patrick Ianni of the ball and slotted past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

The striker instantly pointed out the photographer, who, without hestitation, passed a mobile phone to Dwyer as he ran into the crowd.

Dwyer and Saad were then surrounded by Sporting KC fans who squeezed into the picture, which has since been published on the team's Twitter page.

Talking to Sporting KC'S official website, Dwyer said: 'The celebration was set up.

'It was mentioned earlier today before the game, and it sounded like a cool idea.

'It was a good bit of fun, but I got a yellow card for it so I was lucky I didn't get another yellow or I would have been in big trouble.'

Dwyer spent his youth as an academy player at Norwich before playing for King's Lynn.

But success found him when he crossed the Atlantic after taking a football scholarship at Tyler Junior College.

Dwyer instantly found his feet, scoring 52 goals in 42 games.

He was then drafted by Sporting in the 2012 MLS draft and this season has scored 12 goals, the joint second highest in the league.

After the match in a reply to a fan on Twitter he joked that selfies are 'worse than a bite'.

Fifa's laws of the game, Law 12 covering fouls and misconduct states that: 'Leaving the field of play is not a cautionable offence in itself but it is essential that players return to the field of play as soon as possible.'

While good-humoured celebrations like this are welcomed by the public in football it is likely that any trip into the crowd will earn a yellow card.

The rule book might disapprove but fellow professionals have taken to Twitter to voice their support.

One half of the Downham Market Norwich City Murphy twins, Jacob, tweeted his west Norfolk compadre, saying 'selfie celebration, what a guy!'
