From the kitchen sink to a wok and pots and pans, budding young musicians have been having fun making music from some rather unusual instruments.

The youngsters spent today creating some recycled beats at a junk percussion workshop at The Garage in Norwich.

Pete Murdoch, of Norwich-based ScrapBeat, led the day-long workshop which is part of the Urban Skillz summer camp taking place at The Garage until Friday.

Pete said the team of about 10 young people aged from eight to 12-years-old started with a series of warm-up activities before rehearsing a piece of junk music together, and then spent the later part of the workshop using their imaginations to compose their own tunes.

'They have been great. They have done really well,' he said.

Among the instruments the children could try was a bicycle combined with some barrels and a xylophone, and a series of long tubes that are hit with a bat.

Maisie Lorenzen, 11, said: 'It was brilliant. It was a really imaginative way of making music. My favourite instrument was the one with the pots and pans.'

Darcey Reil, 10, said: 'It was really fun and the music is great.'
