An inquest was opened in Norwich today into the death of Paul Gigg, 30, who was pronounced dead at Norwich Prison on January 27. Gigg was on remand in prison awaiting sentence at Norwich Crown Court on January 28.

The inquest was told that his body was found in his cell by a prison officer on a routine welfare check. CPR was started and paramedics attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination was carried out and the cause of death was given as hanging. The death is not being treated as suspicious, but an investigation will be carried out by the prison ombudsman. The inquest was adjourned awaiting the ombudsman’s report.

As reported, Gigg, of Highwoods, Colchester, was wearing an Incredible Hulk onesie when he attacked his victim.

He was arrested after the 20-year-old woman described what her attacker was wearing to police. The attack occurred during a Kiss Weekender event at Vauxhall Holiday Park in Acle New Road, Great Yarmouth. Gigg attacked the woman between 12.30am and 1.30am on Saturday, October 20 last year.

Hundreds of people from all over the region attended the music event over the course of the weekend.

Following the assault officers sealed off the area, carried out a search of the site, and spoke to residents during door-to-door inquiries.

Gigg, a chef, was arrested three days later.

He pleaded guilty to rape at his plea and case management hearing before Norwich Crown Court.
