Power has been restored to thousands of homes and businesses on the east coast this morning after a tree blew on to overhead powerlines.

Residents in Caister, Hemsby, along with Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Southtown, Newtown, Belton, Burgh Castle and down to Hopton and Corton towards Lowestoft reported power outages and flickering lights.

Some areas lost power for just a few minutes, while others remained in the dark.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said the fault was reported at about 8.30pm last night and involved a fault to the high voltage network, which affected supplies in Caister, Great Yarmouth and the surrounding area.

The power company said that half of the affected properties had their power restored by 11pm and the remaining at around 1am this morning.

The power cut also resulted in traffic light failures in the area and problems are still being reported both ways on the A12 Lowestoft Road at the Bridge Road junction, Gorleston.

  • Another strange thing happened during the power cut, because there was no computers, laptops, mobile phones and television people started to talk to each other. How strange nowadays.

  • Agree with megavolt- accidental power cuts from gales and things like freezing rain on overhead wires ( which cut off GY years ago for a long time) we can accept and put up with, but when a line which affects power to such a wide area is brought down by a tree one wonders why the tree was left growing close to such an important line. Usually power companies come and hack away trees quite harshly if they see them as a risk.

  • Caister was off from 8pm till 1.40am, Flipping freezing also O2 mobile went down with it, so I couldn't contact anyone. It made me think of the poor people who lost power for days over xmas. Hopefully they have sorted it out now.

  • We must think how lucky we have been on having the power off for such a short period of time when you consider those down south who have had all the flooding and no power since before christmas and are now going to experience some more. Thank you to the engineers for getting us back after a short time.

  • We're out in Stokesby near Acle and lost power about 8.30m then in complete darkness until about 01.30, the entire village was out. Wonder if anyone further out was affected like us as it doesn't seem to have been reported on the news.

  • Living in Belton, power was restored in about 15 minutes. Nice one for UK Networks in re-routing so quickly. A really stupid question . . if the fault was due to a falling tree, don't know if it was a 3.3kV, 11kV , 33kV or higher voltage feeder, why on earth weren't the trees adjacent to the power lines pruned or removed so this problem could not occur??

  • If as being reported mobile phone signals were also lost as a result of the power cut as someone has already said, how does this affect local resilience planning. If it had happened during the bad weather and high tides a few weeks ago we would have been in a right mess. Just shows, we should have kept the flood sirens.

  • Our power went off again about half an hour after it came back on, but was back on again in 10 minutes. According to the article Caister, Great Yarmouth and the surrounding area black out, was caused by a fault to the high voltage network, not a tree falling on the cables.

  • Power went off about 8.40 and wasn't back on until 2ish. Lights from the Christmas decorations using batteries stayed on of course. Christmas candles all over the house were used instead of just looking pretty till next year and my new Kindle has back lighting so all was well. Did miss "Sherlock" though...thanks to "catch up" will see it tonight!

  • We have had flickering lights tonight - thought the power may go off. We lost power in the early hours of Christmas eve when a pole snapped near our house. It only affected a few houses. UK Power Networks worked very swiftly to restore the pole and our power. We were back on by 5.30pm and plans for Christmas day was back on - Well done UK Power Networks !
