Update: ‘No fire’ at Mundesley restaurant where woman left in serious condition with burns

A woman is in a “serious condition” following an incident in a Mundesley restaurant this morning.

Fire crews from Mundesley, Cromer, Stalham and Sheringham were called to the Jonet Restaurant, Beach Road, at 9.40am.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance treated a woman with burns and she was airlifted to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford where she was said to be in a “serious condition”.

It is now understood that there was no fire in the building. The incident prompted a large police presence and forensics officers conducted a search of the area.

Lewis Smith, barman at the nearby Ship pub, said at one time there had been 12-13 police vehicles in the village, including armed officers guarding the nearby Bacton gas site.

A police spokesman said it had “certainly not” been an incident requiring an armed response.

Would-be customers trying to enter the restaurant at about noon were turned away by a woman, looking distressed, who opened the door to them. She told them that “something’s gone wrong here.” Police officers could be seen inside the building.

The police spokesman added: “This incident is not being treated as suspicious and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with it.”
