Emergency services are at the scene of an accident in Lowestoft.
A man in his 70s has died and an elderly woman is in a critical condition after a car hit pedestrians in Lowestoft tonight.
Ambulance crews and police attended the scene of the accident in Yarmouth Road at 9pm after reports a car had hit some pedestrians.
Five people had been crossing the road near the Foxburrow Beefeater when the accident happened. A blue Renault car, which had travelled south along the road towards Lowestoft, hit two of the pedestrians - a man and a woman, both in their 70s.
Both were taken to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, but the man was pronounced dead. The woman is in a critical condition.
The pair had been crossing the road with three others, a man and two children, none of whom were injured.
Sgt Julian Ditcham, from Suffolk Police, said: “Five people were crossing the road in the vicinity of the Foxburrow pub. Three of the pedestrians had crossed the road fully, but the two rearmost had been involved in a collision.
“A male pedestrian has unfortunately lost his life and a female pedestrian is in a critical condition at the James Paget University Hospital.”
The woman who was driving the car was not hurt.
The road was closed both ways between Bentley Drive and Corton Road, while officers carry out an investigation.
Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who saw it, or has information, should call Sgt Ditcham at Suffolk Police on 101.
