A number of firearms officers were called to Cedar Avenue last night following a report regarding concern for safety.

Officers attended an address in that area at about 9.40pm and later recovered items including a crossbow.

The 17 year old was arrested close by on suspicion of affray and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Neighbours have today spoken about their shock following the incident.

A 48-year-old woman who lives in Cedar Avenue with her daughter, 16, and son, 20, said she returned home at about 10pm and was asked by a boy, who “lives up the road” if she would “help him find someone with a crossbow”.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: “I thought he was a bit intoxicated. He said he was running around with a crossbow. He said could I help him find him but I said no I’m parking the car and going in.”

Four or five police cars later arrived to cordon off the road and the woman said she then thought “maybe there was someone with a crossbow”.

She said she was concerned for her daughter who was “quite scared”.

The 16-year-old, who did not want to be named, said she had heard two people were having an argument. One of them had a crossbow.

She said she watched from a window as the drama unfolded.

“I saw police with dogs and armed police.”

Another neighbour, 28, who did not want to be named, said he was cycling home after spending time with friends and was confronted by six or seven police cars “parked in the middle of the road” on Ivy Road.

He was able to get through and later heard it might be something to do with an argument. He said: “It’s really surprising.”

A 21-year-old man from Spixworth, who did not want to be named, said he was working at the Spixworth Motel until about 10.30pm and went over to the social club on Crostwick Lane for a drink, but saw police cars in the car park.

He went to have a drink with his friend at a property on Cedar Avenue but saw more police.

He said: “I just saw one police car up Cedar Avenue but I’ve got no idea what’s going on.”
